Bites Nearby: Main Street Cafe

co-owner Darin Parker has found an unorthodox way to raise money for the . She has placed a 'cuss jar' on her bar, and penalizes her regulars when they slip and let a curse word or two slide. "The first five weeks we had the jar we raised $269," she said. "Then we added the Wednesday night trivia money with that and donated $660."

(The popular trivia night has its own blog, by the way.) That isn't all. Main Street's regular customers donated $2,887.50 over the Christmas holiday by 'purchasing' stockings that then hangs on the mirror behind the bar. It's these types of bar events — as well as group outings to, say, the local bowling alley or ski trips with both its army of regulars as well as newcomers — that, in part, make Main Street Cafe an important part of the village fabric.

The other part is the food. Under the direction of chef co-owner Tim O'Neill, the kitchen turns out consistently well-cooked meals.

Known for thick, juicy burgers, Main Street Cafe also knows how to cook fish and shellfish. My personal favorite is the seafood fra diavolo which comes packed with mussels, clams, shrimp, scallops and calamari ($23.95). Main Street also has both a specials board that changes nightly — a recent night offered crab and lobster ravioli for $13.95— as well as regular specials, such as corned beef and cabbage on Monday nights. Main Street also has a full bar with knowledgeable friendly bartenders and Northport Harbor is visible from the front door. The decor is focused on New York and American newsmakers, as well as the regulars. Framed pictures of gangsters and athletes and cops line the walls, except the back wall, which is covered in caricatures of most of the regulars circa 1996. Parker made the wall as she was a staff member for many years before purchasing the restaurant in 2004.

Reservations not required but suggested for parties of eight or more. Open daily for lunch and dinner. 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m.: Sun.-Thurs. 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m.: Fri.-Sat. The bar stays open later. Prices $11 to $24 for entrees.
